AT&T loosens up, allows FaceTime on LTE For most

20121109-130716.jpg

AT&T is famous for annoying their customers with iPhones. At the launch of iOS 6 AT&T made it so only members with a shared data plan would be able to use FaceTime off 4G. It seems AT&T has learned that was a reason many people were leaving their network for Verizon and will make it so anyone without an unlimited data plan can use FaceTime over cellular.

Of course it says LTE device meaning iPad 3,4 and iPhone 5 customers exclusively with the upcoming LTE iPad mini as well. It says LTE models but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will not run off of AT&T 4G hspa+ networks as LTE doesn’t cover very many places. This will be available in the next 8 to 10

This means users with an LTE enabled device running on AT&T will be able to FaceTime on cellular data as long as you don’t have an unlimited data plan.

iPhone 5 Review

The iPhone 5 has been with it for a little over a week now and I think it would be a good time to review it. So let us dive into the best iPhone ever made in our review.

Design

There is no doubt that the design is completely new. The form however is from the iPhone 4 we saw in 2007. However the design brings back the glorified aluminum back as I loved in the original iPhone. It seems to make the phone feel more business type than the older iPhones. The phone boasts a thinner design. In fact it is currently the thinnest smartphone you will be able to find on the market. The new iPhone also boasts a sort of shinny coating on the sides of the screen near the aluminum antennas which you don’t think would be so important but it actually makes the screen look even better. The headphone jack has been repositioned to the bottom with the new lightning connecting and improved speakers. Yes you also get a new 4 inch retina display which we will get into this more below.

Hardware

The hardware is what makes it and we will get into a more in depth detail look at all of the hardware in individual little sections. For a summary all of the hardware is new to me it seems. You have a new LTE radio for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint for the US and many more for overseas. You also have of course the new 4 inch display with 33% more color contrast and yes it does make a big difference. The new lightning connector is actually not bad and companies are already working on cheap adaptors and products that have the new connector. The speakers have been improved taking on sort of the style of the original iPhone with the wholes in the bottom. However the A6 chip is what makes this phone shine making it lightning fast. So with the basics covered lets get down to each thing individually.

4G LTE

A lot of people were disappointed when the iPhone 4S did not get LTE. However LTE wasn’t even in most places and at the time there was no need to rush to put it in. Now with LTE expanded in countries and growing in the US with a great number of Android phones running on the network pushed Apple to include LTE in the iPhone 5. The speeds for me on LTE got up to 70 MBS as shown in the picture above. However speeds will vary because of number of phones on the network, coverage, and the network provider.

4 Inch Screen

The iPhone 5 was the first iPhone ever to get a screen increase. Honestly I wish I could say that it is amazing but it won’t come to life on Apple’s end for at least another year. iOS 6 was finalized before the event so nothing like on screen widgets or interactive wallpapers which are seen on Android phones happened. It probably will happen with iOS 7 next year for Apple and the main apps. For right now the screen is dependent on developers using the extra space for their apps. It is extremely annoying to used letterbox apps especially when they use the keyboard.

Lightning Connector

A lot of people were angry when Apple decided to change the dock connector it has used sense 2003 on it’s products. However this was a good decision. To make the device as thin as it is and to fit a bigger battery this needed to be done. The phone could not have been this thin and have as great battery life without using the lightning connector. Also don’t forget the best part: It’s reversible so it fits either way.

Battery Life

The battery life of this phone is simply amazing. I am able to make it last a full day with heavy usage and in places where I will be honest service isn’t that great. Playing games will drain the battery faster than surfing the web or listening to music but I am getting the expected battery life.

Camera

The camera is basically the same thing as the iPhone 4s same number of megapixels and all. Apple improved the video stabilization. The panorama feature is very very cool but is also on the 4S with the iOS 6 update.

A6 Chip

There is only one thing to say about the A6 chip and that is HOLY FAST. Maybe this is because I have been using an iPhone 4 for a number of years but the A6 in the iPhone 5 is faster than the A5X in the new iPad! It is truly amazing. I can launch apps and they will be open almost instantly no matter how big the app is. Apple did very well with this chip and the speed shows how much work they put in it.

iOS 6

I am not going to say a lot here because I am working on a separate review for iOS 6. However the iPhone 5 runs iOS 6 very well.

Summary

If you have an iPhone 4 or any phone with an upgrade I would rush out and buy the iPhone 5. It’s crazy thin and amazing in design. However if you are locked in contract with the iPhone 4S or some other phone and you can live without the speed and LTE then stay away for a generation and wait for the iPhone 5s.

iPhone 5 Pre Orders Are LIVE!!!!

AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and Apple are all now taking pre order requests for the iPhone 5. Might want to hurry. The Apple servers seem to be holding well but if the store goes down try using the Apple Store app for the iPhone. I got the 32 GB Black/Slate on AT&T. Which model will you be getting? As always good luck!

Everything you need to know about the new iPhone 5!

;

;

The day has finally come with the new iPhone being announced. So I thought I would run down the most important aspects that make this phone the best iPhone yet.

Pre Orders and Launch

The new iPhone will not be available for pre order today (Sad Face) but they will be available for Pre Order on September 14th in the US and available in store 8AM. This will also be the date the Pre Orders arrive. There is no word on what time the Pre Orders will start but if history repeats itself (Which it is with Friday being the day!) then Pre orders will start at 3:45 PM Eastern or 12:45 Pacific.

The New Charger

The new charger for me is actually one of the best things. For so long I have wished it was smaller. However I hard a little nerd freakout moment when they said that the connector works both ways. All of you know this feeling: When you are in the dark ready to charge your iPhone and then you can’t figure out which way the connector goes. No more! There of course will be an adaptor that looks ridiculous but can already bought on the online store!

The New Screen

Of course we have known about this for a while but today it is official: The new iPhone for the first time ever will have a bigger screen then the ones in the past. if it seems pointless now that’s because it sort of is. However I have high hopes the next iOS(7) will take us away with the new screen!

A6

The new iPhone sports a brand new never before A6 processor. This chip will make your iPhone fly. I don’t know all the details but I am told that it is 2x faster than the iPad. Hopefully this is true

LTE

This one was not really a surprise for me because the iPad had it. However now the iPhone is able to connect to LTE on Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. Sorry T-Mobile USA you will not have the iPhone unless you get one unlocked.

Earpods

;

The new headphones that will come with the iPhone 5 are designed specifically for your ear without suction. I have hope they will be decent.

Design

Finally we are at the design. They say they have an entire new design for the phone but that’s not true. It has the same form factor as the 4 did but the screen and sides and back are all different. The back will be Slate and Black for the Black Model and Silver and White for the white model. The sides will be aluminum and will match the color of the aluminum on the back.

Remember that the phone has the same price point and same storage models.

FlashBack Friday Part 2: Apple’s Past iPhone Event Invitations

With the iPhone Event invitations out for Wednesday I thought it would be cool to look at the past iPhone and iOS invitations.

WWDC 2007: The Original iPhone

The Original iPhone will always reign to me as the best iPhone. Not as far as specs go but with design. I feel the best design for the iPhone was the aluminum brushed with plastic we all saw at WWDC in 2007.I got one last year of eBay and yes I do still use it. As far as updates go the iPhone was killed at 3.1.3 but has not been forgotten.

WWDC 2008: iPhone 3G and the App Store

If you were like me the original iPhone was to expensive when it first launched at 500 dollars for the low model. Therfor you were waiting for the next generation to come quickly and hopefully with a lower price tag. When Steve Jobs told us all about the iPhone 3G and the App Store I went crazy! The iPhone 3G was my first iPhone and I still have one with me. The iPhone 3G was killed at iOS 4.2.

iPhone OS 3.0 Event

The iPhone OS 3.0 event brought the world iPhone OS 3.0. To me the event was not as impressive as I would have liked but was still okay. Right around then I started to get interested in Apple.

WWDC 2009: The iPhone 3Gs

At WWDC 2009 the world was given the iPhone 3Gs that is still around with us for probably only a few weeks now. The 3Gs brought a faster processor and video recording to the iPhone.

WWDC 2010: iPhone 4 iOS 4

WWDC brought us the iPhone 4 which was famously bought by Gizmodo and leaked on the internet before the initial launch. The form is still being used in iPhone’s today and will be brought probably to the next iPhone as well with some added features. iOS 4 brought folders and multitasking to the world of iOS.

Lets Talk iPhone: iPhone 4s

The famous let’s talk iPhone event was the last iPhone event before Steve Job’s passed away. The event was supposed to be home to the iPhone 5 but we got the 4s instead with Siri.

September 12: iOS 6 and iPhone 5

Apple’s September event still remains somewhat of a mystery. However we can be sure that the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 will be launched. to follow the iPhone 5 rumors click here. Remember we will have live coverage on twitter (@matthewjagiela) and here on the site as well.

Video Shows Rumored Next iPhone in White: It’s Beautiful

As September 12th approaches quicker and quicker rumors, fakes, videos, pictures, and even more are coming alive. We have even started the countdown to the rumored date of the announcement and I am working to make sure that you get the information as it happens. To start the day we have a video of the Rumored Next iPhone in white fully assembled and all I can say is the device looks beautiful.  People I know are very anxious for the new phone myself included. The fact that we have not seen a new iOS 6 build in 4+ weeks (normal is 2-3) supports the GM is ready to go.

As the new iPhone event comes near the rumor mill has exploded! I am posting at 1:30 in the morning of rumors and researching. Today we have something quite interesting. New images show how the new iPhone purposed design compares to the past iPhones. These photos show how taller and slimmer the new iPhone is compared to it’s past brethren’s.
