Apple: A Year In Review

Apple had a really big year. So I thought I would go into everything Apple did in 2011. Well not everything but the big things. So let’s get started.

iPad 2

The iPad 2 has been an amazing hit for Apple, and it still is. First announced by Steve Jobs on March 2nd 2011 I didn’t think that it would be such a hit along with many. On release date on March 11th I saw it would be an instant hit. It has turned out everyone wants one. At a point more people wanted an iPad 2 than world piece. It is a great product and when the new one get’s released it will be even better. Good work Apple.

Lawsuits, Lawsuits, and more Lawsuits,

This is a thing I don’t really want to mention but I feel like I have to. This year Apple went a little patent lawsuit crazy. Going after samsung copying the iPad 2. Android Manufactures so many I can’t list them but a quick google search should be able to find you this information. Apple has won over HTC in the US banning some phones from resale. Most older handsets not even for sale anymore. We will have to see how the rest of this plays out.

Lion

Mac OS X lion. Loved by some hated by others. Lion first made it’s way on to ALL of our systems July 20th a near 5 months ago. The software was the first Mac OS to be offered as a download only. It brought features from iOS including Full Screen apps, Resume, auto-save, and most importantly to some the mac app store. The Mac App Store has ton’s of apps. All of Apple’s Apps are also on the store. Lion has been the #1 most downloaded for 5 months and still is. Good work Apple. Personally I love lion and it’s features. Watch my in depth video of Lion here.

iOS 5

iOS 5. The best mobile os update Apple has ever made. Brining iCloud to the world. Great style notifications. iMessage. All of these improving on the already great operating system we have for our iOS devices. It is great and with iOS 5 5.1 beta we will have to see what new things come in the OS when the new iPad hardware is released. Read my iOS 5 review here.

New Management

Steve Jobs after the iPhone announcement announced he could no longer be CEO of Apple as he just didn’t feel like he could do well enough of a job. Placed as the chairman of the board Tim Cook replaced him and is the Current CEO.

iPhone 4s

The iPhone 4s set new records for sales. Breaking the records of weekend sales selling 4 million units in the opening weekend shattering the iPhone 4’s 2 million sales. the iPhone 4s is doing wonders for Apple. With the new A5 processor and Siri. Read my iPhone 4s review here.

Siri

This deserves it’s own spot as it is the biggest reason if not the only reason the iPhone 4s is selling the way it is. Siri Apple’s iPhone voice intelligent system is great and is the base of most of the iPhone ads they are airing today. It is incredible and I want to see it make it’s way to the iPad 3 that should be announced in the next few months. Read my iPhone 4s review including Siri here.

Goodbye Steve…

This year we said goodbye to the man who made Apple run. From the Apple I all the way to the iPhone 5 (ill touch on this next) Steve was the heart of Apple. His legacy still lives in his products as we can see his visions in iOS and all the Apple products we use every day. From the Mac to the iPhone. Thank you Steve… For everything.

iPhone 5

The rumor of the iPhone 5 has been going on for a while now and is still to this day. This was supposed to be the iPhone to be released and not the iPhone 4s. It was said that the iPhone 5 was one of the final projects Steve had worked on. Scrapped at the last minute we didn’t see the mystical device and we are hoping to see it this year. The iPhone was said to have a 4 inch screen, LTE 4G, and a new form factor. The phone is said to have been scrapped due to supply shortages or a hardware problem. New iPhone 5 concept

A new iPhone 5 or next generation iPhone concept has arrived and to be honest I don’t love it but at the same time I don’t hate it. We can see the screen is a little larger from the current 3.5″ to a 4.3″ screen. I do like the upgraded screen and the fact the back is no longer glass and seems to be aluminum. I however don’t like the home button that seems to be an enlarged home button. Also the form doesn’t seem the best and the camera looks a little small. This is the design video made by ADR studios.

For hardware there is of course the upgraded screen, new home button which could be capacitive, new A6 chip that will most likely dual core but with upgraded speed. You can read all of our posts about the iPhone 5 by clicking here. More images below

iPhone 5 and iPad 3 to have LTE [Rumor]

20111130-150843.jpg

Sense the iPhone 4 has come out the next question for the world was when would the iPhone gain LTE 4G support. Many thought that the iPhone 5 that was going to be the first LTE device but then the iPhone 4S came around and that dream was squashed. You could say though that the iPhone 4S is “4G” on AT&T HSPA+ network but that’s not true 4G. Now the rumor is that the iPad 3 is going to be the first iOS 4G LTE device.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to have met with NTT DoCoMo president Kiyoyuki Tsujimura and VP Takashi Yamada earlier this month to work out the details of the arrangement, and the companies have reportedly reached agreeable terms.

the quote above is meant for the 4G release of an iPad or iPhone. However this doesn’t say anything about the release dates at all. However if the iPad 3 is going to be the first 4G iOS device we see than will we see at a usual time this year in January? Or will we have to wait till later for apple to make sure the 4G works. Or could we see what they did with the first iPad release the wifi only and keep making and testing the cellular one? We will find out soon!

“Lets Talk iPhone” Rumor Roundup

I think it is safe to say there will be no more rumors between now and tomorrow so I am going to do a little Apple “Lets talk iPhone” Rumor round up what we will see at the event all the way to the release date all these rumors from the past month combined into 1 awesome post.

iPhone 5

This seems like a near dream to me now. The fact of the matter yes it could come and I wish it will and I am sure a ton of you fanboys are hoping that it does too. The fact of the matter is yes I do think it will come but there is no proof from Apple… Yet anyways. We have seen leaked cases and cases even showing up in inventories along with the device itself! Launch Date is rumored to be October 14th!

iphone 4s

This is the iPhone that is expected to be announced tomorrow. It is supposed to just be a hardware bump to the iPhone 4 with a CDMA iPhone 4 antenna and possibly a metal back? Never know. But this iPhone is the more likely to show up tomorrow. There is evidence of this in Apple’s inventory system and even in iTunes! Launch date is rumored to be October 14th!

iOS 5

Yes for everyone not picking up the newest iPhone you will be happy to hear that the betas have stopped for iOS 5 we haven’t seen a new one for 4 weeks now I think. The GM will be launched to developers tomorrow I am sure and everyone should get it either by Friday or next Tuesday.

Voice Assistant

This is in iOS 5 no doubt. We have proof of it! No one except the insides at Apple and carriers have been able to use it though tomorrow is the day we might see the voice control come to the world! The co-founder of Siri even said Assistant will change the way we interact. Need any more proof? The question is will Apple surprise us and make this an iPhone 4s/5 only feature.

iCloud

Yes iCloud. A great feature of iOS will be launching to the world sometime this week whenever iOS 5 does. iCloud is amazing and I can’t wait for all of you to try it.

iPods anyone? we can dream right?

This is very very far stretched which is why I made it the last one on our list. There has been no rumors for the iPod touch 5 other than it will have a white front… No rumors of design changes or an announcement date. Some would like to think it is tomorrow but it is a “Lets Talk iPhone” event. As Apple usually announces iPods around this time the order of thing have been messed with a lot this year so I don’t think we will see any iPods tomorrow but hey we can dream and hope for them like the iPhone 5 right?

about tomorrow…

Yes this is going to kill me. The event is during school for me and won’t have a live stream up on Apple’s site but below here is a list of websites that are covering the event that you should check out. This is going to be my first iPhone announcement I wont be able to watch the live feeds for so I am not happy about this and I am not happy saying you should go to another site to see whats new… Don’t worry everything will be covered in my post roundup of the day and yes it will be a giant one! Remember my iOS 5 review is featured and will be on top of the site for some time so make sure to scroll down to see the newest post! Thanks!

iPhone 4S 16-32-64GB shows up in vodka phone store.

20111003-074312.jpg

Something very interesting showed up today on the German carrier Vodaphones site today. Despite rumors of the iPhone 5 might be coming Vodaphone has posted the iPhone 4s in 16/32/64gb models. Of course this means nothing till the actual event tomorrow so all you fanboys can have hope. Vodaphone like every carrier reads rumor sites and sort of basis everything on that. They know as much as we do. All of these rumors will be put to rest tomorrow thankfully when we see what Apple is bringing to the market.

What to expect from Tuesdays event

All of these things are making me completely insane. iPhone 5 or not? Well up to this point anyways I had believed there would be a new iPhone 5 that would be completely redesigned. Now it seems those chances are slimming day by day. I still believe Apple is messing with all of our heads like they did with the original iPhone before it was announced. After all this has been the longest time between iPhone models but that doesn’t mean they have spent the time redesigning the iPhone. Remember the iPhone 3Gs looked EXACTLY like the iPhone 3G just with bumped internals. Remember the iPhone 4 has a great design one that I personally love and it wouldn’t be the worst thing to keep the same design. Yes we have seen some proof of the iPhone 5 leaked cases, leaked websites with it, and even inventory and case arrivals at AT&T but nothing in iTunes. I honestly thing Apple is messing with us and we will see an iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4s is just a place holder in iTunes with the CDMA iPhone look to keep people from knowing the truth and the iPhone 4 will be the low budget model. Either way don’t expect the iPhone 5 on tuesday because if it doesn’t happen… You’ll be disappointed.

Facebook iPad app to be announced at Apple iPhone Event?

Mashable is reporting that Facebook’s long awaited iPad app will be announced at Apple’s upcoming event which is rumored to be october 4th. Also Facebook is reportedly revamping the iPhone app to be faster and usable and a new HTML 5 version of the mobile site. The iPad app was leaked earlier this Summer with it being in the iPhone 3.4 app and then being blocked by Facebook itself. According from a former Facebook engineer Jeff Verkoeyen says the app is ready, and Facebook is waiting to release it. The companies don’t have the best history but launching a revamped iPhone and the iPad app alongside iOS 5 and the new iPhone’s seems logical. So what is the rumored stuff for October 4th? The Next iPhone(s),iOS 5, and if the reports are true a Facebook iPad App. October will be an exciting month!

iPhone event to be held at Apple Campus?

Yes I know I am late with this one but I had a ton of homework. So John Paczkowski of All Things D the original man who reported October 4th as the iPhone announcement date is saying that instead of the event booked somewhere else like the San Francisco center Apple will be holding the iPhone event at their own campus.
Why? That’s not entirely clear. Perhaps the release date was too much of a moving target to risk booking a large space like Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), which has hosted a number of big product unveils in the past. Perhaps, the company felt a more intimate venue was best for newly installed CEO Tim Cook’s first media event. Perhaps YBCA was simply already booked. Whatever the reason, the world will get it’s first look at the next iPhone at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium in early October.
The Cupertino campus is where Apple had the free iPhone bumper press conference last year. Never before has an iPhone ben announced on the California campus. Then again nothing this year is like before.

LTE iPhone Coming in 2012 with “Materially improved user interface”

Well here is something that can make people dream. A new report from Wedbush securities said the next gen iPhone will land in October alongside “an iPhone targeting emerging markets and an LTE iPhone in 2012 with a “materially improved user interface.”” While I just reported here that there is defiantly a possibility of 2 iPhones the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 coming October 4th it looks like. The LTE iPhone 5 would be a great thing to take control of faster 4G speeds and opening all new things for the iPhone that was not possible for 3G like FaceTime over cellular data. It makes me hope when my contract is up I can run out and get a LTE iPhone and that improved user interface would be great for iOS 6.
